The initiative pairs EAL students with peer mentors, known as Global Guides, who provide guidance and support throughout the school year. These ambassadors are carefully selected from Year 9 and Year 10 students, who have demonstrated a strong understanding of the challenges faced by new arrivals and have a passion for helping others.
The program’s primary aim is to create a welcoming environment for EAL students, ensuring that they feel part of the school community. Through weekly form time sessions, the Global Guides help their buddies navigate the school’s routine, assist with home learning, and encourage participation in extracurricular activities. The mentors also share cultural experiences and language tips, making the transition smoother for students who may be new to the country or have limited English proficiency.
“I’m really happy that I’m going to help other students with their English” said Pariya one of the Year 10 EAL Ambassadors. “Being part of this program allows me to help others enjoy school and that makes me happy as I personally love being at Cansfield”
The school’s leadership team believes the program will not only aid EAL students in their academic and social development but also foster a sense of community within the school. “We are committed to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has the support they need to succeed,” said Miss Rothwell EAL Coordinator. “The Student Buddy System is a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn from each other, build friendships, and enhance their overall experience at Cansfield High.”
As part of the launch, students were given the opportunity to meet their EAL Ambassadors at a special event held at the start of the school year. The event featured ice-breaker activities and team-building exercises, designed to help form strong connections between students and mentors.
The school has received positive feedback from both EAL students and their families, with many praising the initiative for its focus on inclusivity and peer support.
“I feel much more confident about speaking English now,” said one EAL student, reflecting on her experience with the system. “My buddy helps me with everything, from understanding lessons to finding my way around the school.”
With plans to expand the program in the future, Cansfield High School is setting an example for how schools can provide meaningful support for EAL students, helping them thrive academically and socially.
