During these exceptional times we still want to provide prospective families with an insight into our wonderful school and what we can offer your son or daughter. Our Virtual Welcome (accessed below) provides a glimpse into life at Cansfield High School, showing some of our facilities, students and staff and giving a sense of what our community is all about.
Our Curriculum
Our curriculum offer is dynamic, rigorous, meaningful and innovative from seven inspirational and experienced Faculty areas. Students benefit from a broad curriculum that widens ambitions, prepares them for Further Education, training and employment. Below, you can head our Heads of Faculty give an overview of what their areas cover and why they matter.

Extra-Curricular Activities
We place huge importance on developing a student’s character, nurturing talents and inspiring creativity. We also recognise our responsibility to support the health and happiness of our students, not just their academic results. This means that we work on the basis that every child should be happy, healthy, engaged and challenged to grow in our environment. We believe that for our students to flourish, they must be recognised as individuals and have chance to pursue their individual talents and interests. Through participating in extra-curricular activities (be it sports, the performing arts or another area of interest) character is built, creativity is sparked and talents are nurtured. The skills that students develop complement our balanced curriculum which has breadth as well as depth. Our extra-curricular activities are wide-ranging and provide something for everyone. A sample of the clubs, activities and events on offer include:
Football | Hockey | Table Tennis |
Chess Club | UKMT Maths Challenges | Foreign Films Club |
Dance Club | School Productions | The Brilliant Club |
Duke of Edinburgh Award | Rugby | Trampolining |
Student leadership is something we foster at Cansfield with many roles that our students embrace including Student Parliament, PALs / PALMs our peer support teams, senior prefects and prefects and student librarians. We also offer students the opportunity to visit a vast number of countries including Spain, France, German and Iceland. All of our Year 7 students are offered a place on our annual trip to Colomendy and Lille.
Further Information
We hope that the videos contained on this webpage and the school website more broadly have given you a flavour of what our school is about. Obviously this year we have been unable to host our annual Year 6 Open Day, but should your child be particularly anxious about the move to secondary school and you feel that a visit to Cansfield would be beneficial then we are more than happy to arrange an after school tour with a senior member of staff. To arrange a tour please contact Mrs Shoreman (Senior Assistant Headteacher) at l.shoreman@cansfield.wigan.sch.uk or telephone the school office on 01942 727 391. You are also welcome to contact any of our leaders for further information about any aspect of our school life and curriculum. We look forward to welcoming you to our school in the near future.
