Music KS4

MUSIC GCSE

COURSE DETAILS:

There are three parts to Music GCSE:

  • Listening: A written exam
  • Composing: Coursework
  • Performing: Coursework

Composing and performing are both internally assessed and then externally moderated. Playing an instrument and having instrumental lessons is preferable, but not essential, in preparation for the Year 11 exam.

The written paper covers the study of :

  1. Music for film
  2. Music for dance
  3. Music for special events
  4. Orchestral developments
  5. Pop music since 1960

Plus a general study of music history and theory.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO:

Listening (25%)
All questions relate to musical extracts and scores covered in the areas of study.

Performing (25%)
Two pieces, one solo, one as part of an ensemble of at least 3 musicians.

Composing (25%)
A folder of your own compositions - music you have made up yourself throughout the course - together with recordings of these. Normally 3 or 4 pieces are needed. One of the compositions will relate to the 'music for special events' area of study.

Integrated Assignment (25%)
