Learning Support

Cansfield Language College, as a community, respects the uniqueness of each individual. We acknowledge that any child who has an emotional, physical, social or learning difficulty that calls for extra provision has a special educational need.

The school aims to identify the special needs of all its pupils, and then to provide appropriate provision for these needs, so that each pupil may maximise his or her individual potential, and develop too, a sense of self-esteem, dignity and worth.

Working closely with our primary feeder schools the SENCO and liaison team will meet the Year 6 teachers / SENCOs and collect information regarding those children identified as having Special Education Needs and where possible, will meet the children concerned. This information will be disseminated to all subject teachers prior to the children starting school in September. All subjects are responsible for meeting the special educational needs their pupils may bring to the classroom.

The Learning Support Department provides a support tailored to the needs of the child. Specific needs will be met by a variety of methods – small groups, withdrawal, classroom support, individual support and specific subject support. The principle that all pupils should receive a broad and balanced curriculum relevant to their individual needs and within the constraints of class size is considered very important.

All children are given encouragement and support to enter external exams.  Students are supported and guided when making subject choices at Key Stage Four and in selecting appropriate Work Experience placements.

The School has access to the Specialist Services currently provided by the borough Children and Young People’s Services.  Parental involvement is welcomed and encouraged.
