Mr. L. Archer – Chair of Governor

  • Chair of Governors for the past 3 years

  • Part of the Governing body for 16 years, as parent governor then as co-opted gov.

  • Now retired – previously worked at Pilkingtons from leaving school –     initially as a production trainee then finally as production area manager before redundancy.

  • Married to Sue – two children and two grandchildred.

  • Hobby – Fishing.

Mr. W. Greenwood, OBE (awarded in 1993) – Local Authority Governor

  • BSc.(Econ 2:2), Cert. Ed(Distinction), Diploma of Advanced Study in Education(Dist.).

  • Education has been a major part of my life. School, College, teaching; running a Teachers

  • Centre, working for then Schools Council which was a national body; Wigan LEA.

  • Degree and DASE via evening classes.

  • Two year period to complete National Service(1956/58).

  • Have lived in Standish since 1980. Married to Ann.

  • Two grown up sons, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren

  • Worked for the Wigan Education Authority since 1974 as Senior Adviser for

  • Secondary and Higher Education and then Assistant Director; took early retirement in 1993.

  • Acted as consultant to the Governments of Zambia and Kenya while working for Wigan LEA.

  • Developed and organised a teacher exchange scheme with Detroit, USA.

  • Upon retirement established a small educational consultancy with some 30+ employees.

  • Worked as a consultant to the Government of Nepal.

  • Retired from the business but it is still thriving.

  • Lifelong involvement in sport, as player, coach, manager, with cricket being my first love.

Current activities.

  • Elected Governor for the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Hospital Trust (3rd term of office).

  • Member of three school Governing bodies, of which Cansfield (since 1993) is one, with Nicol Mere Primary and Highfield Primary(Chorley) being the others;

  • Involved in the church which Ann and I attend:

  • I act as Secretary to the Parochial Church Council.

  • Assistant Secretary to the Cricket Memorabilia Society which has an international membership. Member of four other Cricket Societies, the meetings of which I attend regularly during the winter months.

  • Member of Lancashire County Cricket Club.

  • Avid reader of books, covering a wide range of interests: enjoy travelling.

Mr.  P. Hughes – Vice Chair of Governor

  • I am 48 years old – Married with 2 children

  • I started as a Parent governor – Both my children attended Cansfield

  • I am on the Standards and Curriculum and Director’s Briefing committee

  • I have served on various governing boards for 11 years – Cansfield for 6 years.

  • Very interested in curriculum and data analysis

  • Spent my entire career working in the video games industry

  • In the last 32 years have helped build three successful game development companies.

  • Now Head of Technology at present company.

  • Holds a degree in applied mathematics.

  • Lived in Ashton for 22 years

  • I am keen inventor of magic and maker of ‘impossible bottles’.

  • A wannabe Heston Blumenthal in the kitchen

Mr.  F. Riley – Co-opted Governor

  • I became a governor at Cansfield in 1983 as a Parent Governor    

  • Chairman of Finance Committee

  • Retired

  • Married to Carol, 2 children – both attended Cansfield

  • I worked at H.J. Heinz Co. for 35 years.  I was the UK Distribution Manager

  • My hobbies are Golf, Travel and watching Wigan Athletic​

Mrs. R. Clift – Parent  Governor

  • I am married with 2 children – daughter now left Cansfield and son in Year 7    

  • Previously worked for DWP

  • Self employed Property Manager

  • I am a Parent Governor at Cansfield

  • SEND Governor

  • Member of Safeguarding, Pupil Welfare and Attendance

  • Member of Headteacher’s Pay and Performance Committee

  • Parent Governor at Nicol Mere Primary for approx 12 years.

Mrs. J. Dandy – Co-opted Governor

  • I have been a Governor for 3 years.

  • I am married with 2 grown up daughters, who both attended Cansfield.

  • I work within the banking sector and my current role is within the Financial Crime Department.

As a Governor:

  • I am part of the Finance Committee, Safeguarding, Pupil welfare and

  • Attendance committee and have recently been appointed as Attendance Governor.

There have been many changes during the short time I have been a governor, which have been both challenging and rewarding.  I am committed to continuing to work hard alongside the Headteacher and Staff to ensure the students have a happy and secure environment in which to develop and achieve their potential.

Mrs.  N. Phythian – Co-opted Governor

  • School Governor for 10 years

  • School Governor at Rectory

  • Born & educated in Ashton – played a part in the Scout movement

The role of a governor is a varied one, it is voluntary and demands time and commitment. I joined because I wanted the children in this community to get the best education possible. A school is an extension of the community and it belongs to the community. As a parent and a governor I know that everyone at Cansfield are committed to the education and wellbeing of their students.

Mrs.  R. Bishop – Co-opted Governor

  • I am a 47 year old mother of 3 children.

  • Born in Brighton, lived in Ashton for 19 years.

  • Governor for the last 4 years.

  • I am the Safeguarding governor at Cansfield

  • I went to college – and obtained an NVQ Level 3 which enabled me to work as a classroom assistant.

  • I have worked at Orrell Lamberhead Green Academy for 8 years.

  • At the present I am working towards my qualified teaching status – will graduate in 2018 with a BA (Hons) in Primary Education with a Major in Science & Minor in Special Educational needs.

It is an honour to have been a governor at Cansfield and my aim is to continue this vital role particularly in regards to my passion for Safeguarding and children’s health and well being.

Mr. D. Forshaw – Co-opted  Governor

  • Previous employment before teaching – Co-operative Bank

  • Completed degree at Liverpool John Moores University

  • Teacher of Geography at Cansfield for past 14 years

  • Part of the Governing body for 3 years

  • Previous Schools – Merchant Taylors’, Crosby & St. Aelreds RC, Newton-le-Willows

  • Married to Karen – two children

  • Hobbies – watching Saints Rugby team.

I have enjoyed my role as a governor ensuring that the students are given every opportunity to fulfill their potential.

Mrs. C. May – Staff Governor

  • I have worked at Cansfield since 1978.

  • Staff Governor for 18 years.

  • Married to Dave.

  • Hobbies:  avid reader, armchair fan of rugby league supporting Saints and a petrolhead following F1, MotorGP,  World Superbikes and British Superbikes.

It has proved very rewarding to belong to the governing body, responding to the responsibilities and challenges involved. Ensuring that our students have a happy and secure environment in which to develop and achieve their potential.  Our school has a vital role to play to equip our students with the core skills and values they need to succeed and be happy.
